Red Light Cameras Reduce Traffic Accidents

By now, most of us know about the new red light camera-enforcement system that’s been rolling out over the past year. The City of Knoxville recently released new information about the system as well as some statistics on the effects the system has had on traffic accidents.

“The number of traffic accidents at more than a dozen high-volume

Knoxville intersections dropped 17 percent last year after the installation of photo enforcement or “red light” cameras at those locations.
More importantly the number of total angle accidents - often referred to as “t-bone crashes” - were down 45 percent at those intersections in 2006 when compared to same period in 2005.

I was most pleased to learn,

“There is no cost to the taxpayers,” said KPD Capt. Gordon Catlett, the program’s manager. “The only people who pay for this program are the people who violate the law.”

So basically, if you run a red light and receive a ticket in the mail - part of the fee you pay goes toward funding the system. A family member was recently ticketed by the system and along with the ticket was a photo of the offense as well as a link to a website where you can view the video of the offense. Pretty cool.
